In Our Own Voices

Serving People of Color in Albany, NY

In Our Own Voices, Serving the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgendered People of Color, their Friends and Families.

We focus our efforts in the following areas: We engage in advocacy and education on a number of levels--working to ensure that the voices of LGBT people of color are a part of important conversations in our communities.  We also advocate for legislation and policies that improve the lives of LGBT people of color, as well as for the enforcement of existing legislation. We offer support groups for people who are in recovery from substance abuse. In Our Own Voices is home to the Capital Region LGBT Anti-Violence Project.  We work to improve domestic violence services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, particularly people of color, in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Montgomery, Saratoga, Columbia and Green counties.  We offer a support line for victims; community education, such as presentations and brochures; training for domestic violence programs and social service agencies.  We also advocate for the inclusion of LGBT concerns in community-wide efforts to end domestic violence. We believe we can play an important role in creating community change. As a result, we work with our constituents and the broader community to develop strategies for bringing about the change we seek.

We also have ongoing activities, such as health fairs, support groups on healthy eating, spiritual health sessions, movies, picnics, special dinners, and other events.
